CultRuralis is a prototype for artistic intervention in villages with large creative potential. The project follows a path of gradually passing on the artistic responsibility from the resident artists to the children, aiming for them to learn and acquire skills upon taking artistic decisions, freedom of thinking and discovery of new possibilities for self expression, such as creation of own performances.
CultRuralis is made for children with little or no exposure to creative experience, with very few chance to be given power of decision in an artistic context on a public level.
Even though the village of Jirlau is formed of 80% young population, the typologies of human relationships in such contexts in Romania do not stimulate a process of personal development and self-esteem. This social situation is heavily affecting the way in which the mentality develops, especially for the children. Children and parents have a separate life, which resembles more the urban life style, however, without the advantages of a life in the city. The society is hierarchically constructed, from the head of the family towards the least responsible member – the child. The generations which are less socially active (children and elderly people) are given little to contribute in the community and have few things to say or do in order to create a change in their society.
One of the main reasons why the situation is blocked in this stage is a total unpreparedness of the educational system that the children have access to in applying alternative educational methods that could correct it: methods which teach the values of active participation, in solving problems and increasing self-esteem through being given responsibilities and practicing creativity.
CultRuralis is designed as a social intervention based on the practice of divergent thinking, problem solving and expression of self through artistic creative collaboration.
By involving a team of international artists for workshops and cultural events dedicated to the community, the children go through a process of gradual responsibilization: during an intensive week, the children take over the stage from the artists –in order to learn how to organize own performances.
Through the development of creative results they can express their own indvidual perspectives, opinions and thoughts together with their friends and society in the village.
CultRuralis is made in collaboration with Zvuv String Trio and guest international artists - Juan Albarracín (Argentina).
The artists team leading CultRuralis shares their experience with the children, guiding them towards finding their own voice and opinions, handing them a new tool box in dealing with upcoming changes in today's society and fructify the talent and creativity for becoming aware of those.
90 children from Jirlau, Visani and Robeasca villages – participants in workshops and concerts, and a minimum of 100 local families are audience for the different events.
